USS Tidewater - AD31

Mystery Sailor

In our Fall 2003 Issue of High Tide, we published this photo which was taken from a copy of the 1954 Cruise Book that was loaned to us by Life Member Joe Simac. We asked if anyone knew who this was.

Here are two responses we've received thus far:

From Bill Templeton, BM3 Tidewater 1951-55: The sailor on Page 5 of the Fall Issue of High Tide - you guessed it right. I know his name. Seaman First Class Nigg of the 2nd Division 1954 Med Cruise.

From Carl Graff, QM3 Tidewater 1953-56: I think the helmsman you were wondering about is named Lacey. He was a PO3 or a PO2 who would overdue the liberty routine. He lost a stripe or two because of it. He was a hell of a nice guy. I was often on the Quartermaster watch in the pilot house at the same time he was on the wheel.

How about it, sailor? Do you have an opinion on this? Chime in at ad31@UssTidewater.org if you'd like to give us your recollection of who this sailor is in this great photo of the Tidewater underway.
