This kicks off a series of photos we'll be featuring in upcoming months that were sent to us by Kingsley Bennett who served aboard the Tidewater for about three years in the foundry during the late fifties. Kingsley used a 35mm slide camera and the quality of color and sharpness of the photos is remarkable. This picture of the cooks shows how they slaved over a hot stove for us three times a day whipping up specialties like this meatball recipe that must have been one of mom's, because it was really tasty. Cooking for over 500 sailors wasn't easy, but we had the best food and many tin can sailors would stop by for a meal and remark about how good it was. This was really one of the secrets as to why sailors considered the Tidewater choice duty. Great food! Another of Kingsley's pictures as we continue remembering the Tidewater. |
