17 was the USS Tidewater's home at Destroyer & Submarine
Piers (D & S) in Norfolk. Here was where we did our
work. Destroyers and sometimes Cruisers would tie up alongside
AD31, throw a gangplank across the gap between the ships
and we'd hike, sometimes three of four destroyers deep to
work on a radar antenna or in an engine room. The Tidewater
crew did major repairs on destroyers home ported in Norfolk.
If it could be done without going to drydock, the Tidewater
or one of her sister tenders were assigned the work. They
were busy days for the crews of 500+ sailors aboard these
tenders.
