My buddy's name on the left is Fred Smith. That's me on the right.

I really got excited yesterday when I found your site.  Here is a list that I put together yesterday since you jarred my memory.

Tidewater memories:

  • Hurricane:  Sick for 5 days straight.  Worked thru the night to hook up destroyer and take her in toe.  Don't remember destroyers name. Think it was the Vogelstein.

  • Collision with oiler:    Oiler and Tidewater collided with each other.  Ripped big hole in Starboard side.  Lost 2 lifeboats. Don't remember if this happened on the same day or not.

  • Fuel oil accident:  Fuel oil overflowed up the sounding tubes into the mess decks.  Six (6) inches of black thick fuel oil on mess deck before they got oil shut off.  Work round the clock to clean up this mess.

  • Collision at sea:  Collision with submarine.  Submarine that was in need of repair decided to surface right under the Tidewater.  Destroyed sub 's entire bridge area.  Worked round the clock to make sub watertight so she could go into shipyard for repairs.
