Russell D. Agee - Member No. 0031 - resides in Fair Grove, MO with his wife, Mary. He is a founding member of the AD31 Association. Russell came aboard the Tidewater in June 1963 and worked in R3 Division's Electrical Repair-Rewind Shop. He says he came across our web site by reading the American Legion Magazine. "I can't begin to tell you how excited I was," he says. Agee departed AD31 in May 1966 as an EM3 and is a LIFE MEMBER of the Association.

John Allen - Member No. 0174 - resides in Hemet, CA with his wife, Pat. John reported aboard the Tidewater in October 1951 and worked in 4th Division's Light Machine Shop as a Machinery Repairman. He was aboard for the Feb. 1954 Med Cruise and also the Caribbean Cruise in Nov. 1954. John departed the Tidewater in January 1955 as MR2 and is a LIFE MEMBER of the AD31 Association.

Henry "Hank" Babin - Member No. 0074 - resides in Orange City, FL with his wife, Janice, and is a founding member of the Association. Hank reported aboard AD31 in February 1962 beginning a 5-year tour aboard the Tidewater where he worked in R5 Division's Torpedo Shop, advancing to the rate of TM1. He departed the Tidewater in July 1967 and retired from the Navy in September 1976. Hank is a LIFE MEMBER of the AD31 Association.

Walter T. Ball - Member No. 0128 - resides in Jonesborough, TN with his wife, Susan. Ball reported aboard the Tidewater in 1964 and worked below decks in R-4 Division's Calibration Lab. He goes by the name "Santa" and if you've met him, you know why. He's right out of "Miracle on 34th Street" and is the spittin' image of old St. Nick and yes, "the beard on his chin IS as white as the snow." Walter departed the Tidewater in 1966 as ETN2 and is a LIFE MEMBER of the AD31 Association.

Lester E. "Buzz" Beesley - Member No. 0040 - resides in Nokomis, FL with his wife, Nancy. Buzz reported aboard AD31 as a member of its first crew in October 1945 where he served as a radar/rangefinder operator. He is a founding member of the AD31 Association. Buzz achieved the rate of FT2 prior to departing AD31 in April 1946 and is a LIFE MEMBER of the AD31 Association.

Kingsley Bennett - Member No. 0003 - resides in Ewing, IL with his wife. He is a founding member of the AD31 Association. Kingsley came aboard the Tidewater in July 1956 where he worked in R2 Division and was the lead petty officer in the Foundry during his last two years aboard AD31. William S. Blackstock - Member No. 0190 - resides in Marietta, GA. He came aboard the Tidewater in 1963 and worked in ship's company "O" Division as a signalman. We have a photo of him doing his almost daily routine of communicating with other ship's to schedule their maintenance. This photo was taken in Naples in 1964 as he was operating the light shutter on the 03 deck. Bill departed the Tidewater as SM1 in 1963 and eventually retired from the Navy with 20 years service. He is a LIFE MEMBER of the AD 31 Association.

Sam Boomer - Member No. 0089 - passed away on April 1, 2008 and, until then resided in Norwich, CT. He was a founding member of the AD31 Association and came aboard the Tidewater in February 1966, reporting to R2 Division's Heavy Machine Shop. Sam advanced to MR2 while aboard AD31 and departed in July 1969. He was active in Amateur Radio and held an Amateur Extra Class License AK1B. He was a LIFE MEMBER of the AD31 Association.

Chief Steven R. Bradshaw - Member No. 0028 - resides in Othello, WA with is wife, Linda, and is a founding member of the Association. He served two tours of duty on the Tidewater over a seven year period, first coming aboard in April 1963. He was discharged from the Navy in August 1966 and then 2 years later, he re-enlisted and was promptly assigned to the Tidewater again in July 1968, finally departing for the last time in December 1970 as an OM2. Steve eventually went on in his career in the Navy, retiring in 1983 as OMC. He is a LIFE MEMBER of the Association.

Terry T. Braga - Member #0045 - resides in Oneco, FL with his wife, Paulette. He is a founding member of the Association. Terry came aboard the Tidewater in April 1959 and worked in R Division until 1961. He was tranferred to R5 Division's Diver Locker for the remainder of his tour on the Tidewater. Terry has sent us a number of excellent photos of some of the diving projects in which he participated and they will featured in upcoming issues of the newletter and at the web site. He departed the Tide in January 1963 as a certified Diver SFP2 and is a LIFE MEMBER of the AD31 Association.

Stanley Burdyn - Member No. 0127 - resides in Jessup, PA. Stan came aboard the Uss Tidewater in April 1956 and worked in R-2 Division's Light Machine Shop where he did machine shop work. He says he and the crew worked on more babbit bearings, shafts and pumps than you could shake a stick at. He departed the ship in September 1959 as MR2 and is a LIFE MEMBER of the AD31 Association.

Mike reported aboard the Tidewater in June, 1963 and worked in Ship's Company R Division as a Shipfitter Pipefitter. He made the 1963 Med Cruise and departed AD31 in April 1965. Frederick V. Carnevale - Member No. 0167 - resides in Westbrook, CN and joined the Association in June 2007 with a 1 year membership. He came aboard the Tidewater in November 1951 when she was in Charleston. Fred worked in the sheet metal shop and departed AD31 in August 1955 as ME2.
Lloyd "Jim" Cevora - Member No. 0019 - resides in Norfolk, VA with his wife, Sevilla. He is a founding member of the Association and is the First Vice Commander of the Tidewater Post 327 of the American Legion in Norfolk. Jim spent a total of 24 years in the U. S. Navy and came aboard the Tidewater in January 1970, working in S-1 Division's Data Processing Department as a DP1. He says about his tour "I rode the Tidewater to Yorktown for the offload and was one of the last to get off before the Indonesians took over." Jim pitched on the ship's fast pitch softball team. He departed AD31 in February 1971 and is a LIFE MEMBER of the Association.

Allan R. "Pap" Clark - Member No. 0026 - resides in Taylor, MI with his wife, Anita. He is a founding member of the Association. Allan was a ship's company electrician on AD31 and came aboard in June 1952. He started as an EM striker and after making EM3 was sent to permanenet Shore Patrol duty where he was assigned as a partner to a police officer in Princess Ann County, VA. Later, upon coming back to the Tide, he was assigned as Master-At-Arms. Allan finished his tour and departed AD31 in January 1955 as an EM3. He is a LIFE MEMBER of the Association.

Larry D. "Grover" Cleveland - Member No. 0135 - resides in Broomfield, CO with his wife, Sandra and is a LIFE MEMBER of the AD31 Association. Larry reported aboard AD31 in January 1966 and was a Tidewater Sailor for the entire year, departing in December 1966 as EM3. Lee Clinefelter - Member No. 0171 - resides in Archer, FL with his wife, Kathryn, and is a LIFE MEMBER of the AD31 Assocition. Lee says he boarded AD31 in late 1966 as a young seaman and was stationed on her for the next 4 years with two Med Cruises and some island hopping. He looks at his Navy time aboard ship as a great experience and "will always be thankful to the Navy for giving me a good foundation." Lee departed the Tide in 1970 as QM2.

William D. Cook - Member No. 0001 - resides in New Smyrna Beach, FL. with his wife, Wynne. Bill is a founding member of the Association and is the webmaster at the USS Tidewater Home Page. You can see many of his photos and stories about the Tidewater at our web site. Bill came aboard the Tidewater out of ET "A" school in October, 1962 as an ET striker and departed AD31 in September 1965 as an ET2. His duties aboard the ship included radar repair and lead petty officer in the Calibration Lab in R4 Division. Bill is a Ham Radio Operator and maintains a General Class license N9BCY. He is a LIFE MEMBER of the AD31 Association and was elected to the office of President of the Association in September 2003.

Chief William A. Cornellier - Member No. 0170 - resides in Orlando, FL with his wife, Donna. Early in his 28-year career in the Navy, he reported aboard the USS Tidewater in January 1953 where, like many before and after, he spent some time mess cooking. He became an SH striker and worked in the cobbler shop and soda fountain. Bill departed the Tide as SHSN and went on to enjoy many more years, eventually retiring as SHCS.

George A. Correa - Member No. 0071 - last resided in Las Vegas, NV and passed away on November 15, 2005. He was a founding member of the AD31 Association. George reported aboard the Tide in 1963 and worked in S4 Division's Laundry and Dry Cleaning Plant. "I've met up with several of my old buddies through your web site," says George. He departed AD31 in March 1966 as a SHSN and was a LIFE MEMBER of the Association.

Chief Raymond G. Crites - Member No. 0112 - last resided in Goldsboro, NC with his wife Neda. Chief Crites reported aboard the USS Tidewater in March 1955 as the supervisor in R-2 Division's Boiler Shop. He departed the Tidewater in February 1956 as BRC and was a LIFE MEMBER of the AD31 Association. He passed away on February 5, 2007.

Devon "Bud"Dangler - Member No. 0183 - resides in Naples, FL with his wife, Carol. He entered the U.S. Navy at Great Lakes Naval Training Center in April 1951. He reported aboard the Tidewater in October 1951 to Engineering Division, and was a member of the first crew when AD31 was recommissioned. Bud worked in the Fire Room as a boiler tender, and in After Steering. He departed the Tidewater in October 1953 as FN First Class.

Robert L. Daniel - Member No. 0039 - Bob passed away in June 2005 and until then he resided in Tuscola, TX with his wife Evelyn. He was a founding member of the Association. Donald DeGeus - Member No. 0186 - resides in Joliet, IL Don reported aboard the Tidewater in September 1966 and worked in First Division's deck force. He eventually transferred to the Disbursing Department and worked in O Division's Supply Departement, and departed AD31 in March of 1968 as DK3. He reported aboard the USS Shenandoah AD26 and worked in the disbursing department until he was mustered out of the Navy in 1968. Don is a LIFE MEMBER of the AD31 Association.

Lt. Patrick DelGrande - Member No. 0123 - resides in Hillsdale, NY with his wife, Yvonne. Dr. DelGrande reported aboard the Tidewater in May 1957 where he served as Assistant Dental Officer. He performed his dental duties during the 1958 Med Cruise and has fond memories of his years aboard AD31. He says "I can still hear the OD yelling down to me as I left the Tidewater with my cruise box, 'Hey, Doc, are all your mistakes in that box?'" Lt. DelGrande departed the ship in May 1959 and still maintains his dental practice in upstate New York. He is a LIFE MEMBER of the AD31 Association.

Cdr. John P. Derr - Member No. 0088 - resides in Port Charlotte, FL with his wife, Dottie. Cdr. Derr began his relationship with our association as XO Emeritus, a distinction which the membership betowed upon him as AD31's last Executive Officer before the ship was decommissioned and sold to Indonesia as the Dumai. Mr. Derr started his naval career at Annapols, graduating in 1952 as an Ensign, and then reporting aboard the USS Tuckert (DDR 875) as its First Lieutenant, when the Tuckert was operating off Korea. In 1974, Cdr. Derr commanded the Philadelphia Reserve Fleet of 105 inactive ships where the ships now at Patriots Point were then docked. He served on a total of 6 ships, mostly cruisers and destroyers. The Tidewater was his last, where he served as her Executive Officer until she was decommissioned in 1971. Since his appointment as our XO Emeritus, he has joined the AD31 Association as a founding member.

James J. Dewasme - Member No. 0119 - resides in Peoria, IL. Jim reported aboard the Tidewater in August 1951. He worked in the Ship's Service Office, and also did a hitch on the Master At Arms staff during his last year on AD31. Jim says he found out about the AD31 Association in VFW Magazine. In his words, "I didn't know there was a group like this; I wondered if there was. I have a 1954 Med Cruise Book and a lot of slides from that trip." Jim sent us a few of his black and white snapshots and an excellent black and white photo of the Tide as it passed under the Cooper River Bridge after her shakedown cruise in 1952. We plan to use some of his photos in the future on the web site and in the High Tide newsletter. Jim departed AD31 as SH2 in April 1955 and is a LIFE MEMBER of the AD31 Association.

Harold A. Eggebraaten - Member No. 0054 - resides in Rochester, MN with his wife, Betty and is a founding member of the AD31 Association. He came aboard the Tidewater in April 1952 and during his first year, worked for awhile as a deckhand and then became the Captain's driver. During his second year on AD31, he moved to the Storekeeping Division's supply office where he was in charge of equipment records, supplies and manuals and screened parts and supplies requests for repairs to outside vessels. He remained in the supply office until he departed the Tide in December 1955 as an SK2 and is a LIFE MEMBER of the Association.

Elma U. England - Member No. 0067 - residing in Charleston, SC, joins us as a Friend of the Tidewater and was a shipyard worker who helped build AD31 in 1946. Says Elma, "I was a welder on the USS Tidewater at the Charleston Navy Yard and rode down on it when it was launched in 1945." Elma joins us as a founding member and LIFE MEMBER of the AD31 Association.

LCdr Robert T. Frampton - Member No. 0154 - resides in Jacksonville FL and reported aboard the Tidewater in January 1968 as Supply Officer. He departed the Tidewater in May 1969, eventually retiring from the Navy at NAS, North Island in San Diego CA in March 1983. He currently owns and operates a Hallmark Store in Lake City, FL and is a LIFE MEMBER of the AD31 Association.

Fredrick W. (Rik) Fjelde - Member No. 0032 - resides in Galena, IL with his wife, Genevieve. Rik is a founding member of the Association and reported aboard AD31 in February 1963 where he worked in O Division as a Quartermaster. Gary R. Francis - Member No. 0105 - resides in Monclova, OH with his wife, Darla. He reported aboard AD31 in 1963 as EM2 and worked in R-3 Division's Outside Electrical Repair. He received a number of commendations for his work, one in particular that looks like it was signed by every officer aboard from from Captain O. D. MacMillan on down. Gary departed the Tidewater in 1965 as EM1 Lead Petty Officer just after AD31's return from the 65 Med Cruise, and is a LIFE MEMBER of the AD31 Association.

Lt. Bernard C. Frank - Member No. 0193 - resides in Jacksonville, FL with his wife Anne. He was was aboard during the '67 Med Cruise when Israel shot up the USS LIBERTY. He also was one of the last sailors to see the Tidewater as the Dumai when it went through the Panama Canal Zone. He was stationed there as NEX Officer in 1971. He says "It was sad to see her leave because I knew we would never see her again." Bernard came aboard the Tidewater in October 1966 and served as Ships Store Officer in S-4 Division. He departed in September 1968.

David H. Frischkorn - Member No. 0033 - resides in Mount Airy, MD. He entered the US Navy in 1947 and lists his duty stations as USS Fargo CL 106 and the Navy Yard Sub Group 3 in Charleston, SC, which includes a tour of duty on the Tidewater starting in 1950. He is a founding member of the Association and departed the Tide in September 1951 as a DC3 and is a LIFE MEMBER of the AD31 Association..

Harry C. Gilbert - Member No. 0148 - resides in Benton, KY. He says that while aboard the Tidewater, he found "true love" on a blind date that shipmate Don Bob Usher and his wife arranged. Now, 51 years later, Harry and his wife, Mary celebrated their 51st wedding anniversary in April 2006. Harry reported aboard the Tidewater in July 1951 and worked in Ship's Company as a Disbursing Clerk. He departed in April 1955 as DK3. Harry is a LIFE MEMBER of the Association.

Carl F. Graff - Member No. 0043 - resides in Keysville, VA and is a founding member of the AD31 Association. Rev. Joseph H. Gray - Member No. 0034 - resides in DuBois, PA with his wife Wanda. Joseph is a founding member of the Association and worked in the Ship's Company Radio Shack. Robert Hall - Member No. 0002 - resides in Northfield, MN with his wife Sharon. He is a founding member of the Association and has provided significant insight in researching Tide's history along with the many photos of his Navy days on display at our web site. Bob was aboard the Tidewater from April 1969 to February 1971 and was a member of the crew who helped place the Tidewater into the Mothball Fleet. His duties aboard the Tidewater included serving on the XO's staff and he maintains a friendship with Commander John Derr (his AD31 Executive Officer) to this day. CWO2 Gerald A. Haworth - Member No. 0181 - resides in Lynch Station, VA with his wife, Dorothy. He first reported aboard the Tidewater as FN in 1951 and worked in Repair Division's Machine Shops and the Diving Locker. He departed AD31 in 1953 as MR2 and continued on with a career in the Navy that spanned 22 years, eventually reaching the rank of CWO2 before retiring. Irvin Hayward - Member No. 0073 - resides in Port Huron, MI with his wife Kathleen and is a founding member of the AD31 Association. Irvin came aboard the Tidewater in the mid Forties prior to commissioning. "I was the Outside Man for the Ship," he says. "I played on the baseball team and was on the bowling team." Irvin departed the Tidewater in March 1946 as SK2.

Jack L. Hendricks - Member No. 0158 - resides in Avon, IN with his wife Jacquelyn. He reported aboard the Tidewater for the recommissioning in July 1951 where he worked in Ship's Company as a Disbursing Clerk. He says, "I was able to spend my entire four years aboard the Tidewater. Carl Henry, Sr. - Member 0184 - resides in McKee NJ. He reported aboard the Tidewater in February 1946 and worked in the Wardroom as a Stewardsmate. Carl is a plank owner and was aboard on AD31's maiden voyage after the launching. He departed AD31 in March 1947 and went aboard the USS Benewah APB35 until 1950. He went on in his military career by joining the US Army, rising to the rank of E-6 as a Staff Sergeant.
Grover A. Hensley - Member No. 0068 - resides in Massillon, OH and is a founding member of the AD31 Association. He reported aboard the Tidewater in May 1964 where he worked in the Engine Room, performing all duties, mostly on the throttles when at sea. Gary Hodges - Member No. 0025 - resides in Tewksbury, MA with his wife, Susan. Gary came aboard the Tidewater in 1969 after a 2-year hitch on the USS Massey. He is a founding member of the Association. "I was a Radarman," says Hodges. "There were only 5 of us aboard, and when we were underway we would get ship's service people to help with the watch. There was a Chief Signalman on board who got transferred to Chief Master-At-Arms, and my last few months in the son-of-a-gun had me transferred to the MAA force." If you recognize his name, it is no coincidence as Jules is the grandson of Admiral Jules James, the Commandant of the Charleston US Naval Shipyard when the Tidewater was built. LTjg Charlie C. Johnson - Member No. 0130 - resides in Louisville, KY with his wife Mary Ann. He reported aboard the Tide as an Ensign in September 1969 and was the Communications Officer. He was promoted to LTjg in the Spring of 1970 and remained on board through and slightly after decommissioning in February 1971. Lt. Johnson says he "stayed in contact with some of the people I served with on Tidewater, but one by one, they dropped off the radar screen." Ralph C. Jones - Member No. 0035 - Ralph came aboard AD31 in January 1953 . In applying for his LIFE MEMBERSHIP, he said, "I have waited a long time for this!" Ralph made two Med Cruises (1954 & 1956) and worked in 5th Division and in R1 Division Hull Repair. Ralph was a founding member of the Association and departed the Tidewater in November 1956 as an ME3. He passed away on May 17, 2004 in Fort Wayne, IN.

George Krickovich - Member No. 0015 - resides in East Aurora, NY with his wife Bernadette. George came aboard AD31 in May 1963. He is a founding member of the Association and has fond memories of the Tidewater that include his days as an Electronics Technician in Ship's Company and then in R4 Division. Chief D. R. Large - Member No. 0069 - resides in Virginia Beach, VA with his wife Mary and is a founding member of the AD31 Association. Chief Large's tour on the Tidewater spanned 6 years, reporting aboard in January 1957 as an IM Striker. Chief Earl Leonard - Member No. 0022 - Chief Leonard was a founding member of the Association. He came aboard the Tidewater in 1958 and worked in R-3 Division's Electric Repair Shop where he was the Chief Petty Officer in charge. Chief Leonard was OOD when Sam, the Space Monkey, made his arrival. You can read about his recollection of the event at our web site. He departed the Tidewater in 1962 and retired from the US Navy at the rate of EMCS and is a LIFE MEMBER of the AD31 Association. Chief Leonard passed away on June 8, 2005 and was laid to rest in Arlington National Cemetary.

Fred D. Lewis - Member No. 0027 - Fred resides in Baker, LA with his wife and is a founding member of the Association. He came aboard the Tidewater in March 1953 and worked as an Opticalman in 6th Division. Fred's shipmates sometimes thought they were seeing double as Fred served with his twin brother, Glenn who was also an Opticalman in 6th Division. Both Glenn and Fred departed AD31 in January 1957, both as OM2. Fred is a LIFE MEMBER of the AD31 Association.

George trained at Samson for the Tidewater and was a boom crane operator on the original crew. He came aboard just after her commissioning at the Charleston, SC Shipyard in 1945 and participated in her first decommissioning in 1946. John says he remembers going through Hurricane Donna blazing a trail up the Atlantic coast through Norfolk in September 1960. John A. Montueri - Member No. 0050 - resides in Matthews, NC with his wife, Josephine and is a founding member of the Association. John was a member of the original crew of the Tidewater and participated in her outfitting and commissioning in 1946 at the Charleston, SC Shipyard. He was also aboard for her first shakedown. John departed AD31 in August 1946 as an SF3 and is a LIFE MEMBER of the AD31 Association.

Chief Richard D. Moore - Member No. 0078 - resides in Goose Creek, SC and is a founding member of the Association. He reported aboard in October 59 where he began a lengthy aboard the Tidewater, seeing him promoted from IMSN to IM1 when he departed over 9 1/2 years later. Moore was leading PO for R5 Division and worked in all areas of that division from office machines to the watch shop, and even did a tour on the MAA force. He was promoted to IMC just after leaving AD31 and served on the Shenandoah, and on the Yellowstone where he was R5 Division Officer when the Stone was decommissioned. He also served on the Hunley, and at SIMA Charleston where he built an MIRCS lab just before retiring in November 1977 as IMCS. He is a LIFE MEMBER of the AD31 Association.

Roger P. Nash - Member No. 0014 - resides in Wauwatosa, WI with his wife, Judith and is a founding member of the Association. Roger worked in the Repair Office as a Yeoman and came aboard the Tide in November 1956. A photo of his occupies our memorabilia pages on the Web Site, illustrating that he was a sailor who knew how to enjoy both port and starboard liberty, no matter what port we were in. The fact that he was the Yeoman in charge of liberty cards lends credence to this tale. Roger has lots of stories. The one when AD31 and an oiler collided and ripped a large hole in the side of the Tidewater, or the one when the Tide got stuck in a hurricane and everybody was sick for 5 days straight jogs a lot of Tidewater Sailors' memories. Master Chief Donald O. Norris - Member #0114 - resides in Swansboro, NC with his wife Rosemary. He reported aboard the Tidewater in July 1968 where he worked as Enlisted Personnel Office Supervisor and was the Leading CPO of X Division on AD31. George Okamoto - Member No. 0145 - resides in Yreka, CA. Okie reported aboard the USS Tidewater in 1962 as LN2 and worked in Ship's Office where he handled legal matters for the Captain and the crew. LCDR Byron "Ken" Overbeck, Jr. - Member No. 0041 - resides in Cartersville, GA and is a founding member of the Association. Commander Overbeck served two tours on the Tidewater, reporting first in July 1956 as MM1 in R2 Division. In October 1957, he was appointed WO-1 in charge of Outside Machinery Repair and finished this first tour on AD31 in December 1957. He reported back aboard the Tidewater in August of 1967 with the rank of Lieutenant Commander and assumed the duties of AD31's Repair Officer. Chief Larry Salley - Member No. 0124 - resides in Greenville, SC with his wife Susan. He first reported aboard the Tidewater in July 1951 and worked in the Electrical Repair Department. During his tour of duty on AD31 he advanced from EM3 to EM1 and cruised to GITMO, Glasgow Scotland, Bergen Norway and Cherbourg, France. Chief Salley says, "While in Glasgow the USS Coates lost her Gyro and rammed AD31 putting her starboard anchor in the Crew's Mess." He remembers Cherbourg as a time when no reconstruction of WWII damage had taken place. "Tourist ships were just beginning to make port calls and passengers were not allowed in the city. Trains were backed onto the pier where passengers were routed direct from their ship to the train cars and on to Paris." Chief Salley departed the Tidewater in January 1953 and is a LIFE MEMBER of the AD31 Association.

William E. Slaney, Jr. - Member No. 0100 - this membership was established as a Memorial Membership in memory of his dad's tour on the Tidewater. William Slaney, Sr. reported aboard AD31 in April 1952 as PM3, transferring from the USS Bowers in Norfolk, VA. He was on the 1954 Med Cruise and departed the Tidewater as a PM2 in August 1954 when he was discharged. Bill returned to Norwood, MA and worked as a union carpenter for 32 years, retiring in 1984. He passed away in 1987 when Slaney, Jr. was overseas. Bill, Jr. says about his dad, "He was the main reason I enlisted in the USN. I retired in November 2002 from the Naval Reserve as SKC with 22 years." Bill, Jr. joins us as a LIFE MEMBER of the AD31 Association.

Chief Frederick R. Smith - Member No. 0097 - was a founding member of the Association. Fred reported aboard the Tidewater in January 1957 as a Seaman Apprentice and worked in R-5 Division's Torpedo Shop. He departed the Tide in November 1960 as a TM2 and went on for a career in the Navy, retiring as TMC. Fred signed on with the AD31 Association as a LIFE MEMBER. He passed away after a brief illness on January 15, 2006.

His membership in our organization is significant as his father, Fred Teaster, was a shipfitter in Charleston's Naval Shipyard and helped build the Tidewater. As a child, Gerald saw AD31 on the Buildingways, just before she was launching. As an adult he worked in the Charleston Naval Shipyard as a Mechanical Engineer and retired from there when the shipyard closed. William Arthur Templeton - Member No. 0008 - passed away on November 22, 2005. He was a founding member of the AD31 Association. Bill was aboard the Tidewater for 3 years, 8 months and 11 days starting in 1951. As a plank owner, he saw the ship recommissioned in Charleston, and performed his duties as a Boatswain's Mate in 1st Division at the helm of the fanciest of AD31's liberty boats, the Captain's Gig. Don made a Caribbean Cruise while aboard AD31 and departed in 1953 as PI3. He then reported to the USS Wisconsin where he served until his separation from active duty in 1955. Don then joined the Naval Reserve and retired as LICS after 24 years, serving a total of 28 years with the US Navy and Reserve. He is a LIFE MEMBER of the Association.

Chief Bobby B. Williams - Member No. 0188 - resides in Kinston, NC with his wife, Judy. He reported aboard the Tidewater in October 1961 and made two Med Cruises and was present for Operation Springboard in 1961. He worked in "O" Division as the signalbridge supervisor and also in Crypto. After departing AD31 in March 1964 as SM1, he made a career of the Navy, serving on four other ships, the USS Robert A. Owens (DD827), the USS Ohara (DD889), the USS Coronado (LPD11) and the USS Raleigh (LPD1). His career in the Navy spanned 27 years and he retired as NCCS. James L. Wilson - Member No. 0159 - resides in Elberta AL. He reported aboard AD31 in January 1961 and worked in R3 Division's Crypto Repair. Jim says that he has a lot of memorabilia including an original Tidewater Patch and many pictures from his Tidewater Days. His greatest memory was his Short Timer's Chain. Jim was TAD to USS Canberra during the Cuban Missile Crisis and departed the Tidewater in December 1963 and is a LIFE MEMBER of the AD31 Association.

Ensign John S. Wilson - Member No. 0161 - resides in Glenside, PA. He came aboard the Tidewater in September 1954. The Tide departed for its second Med Cruise in January 1955 with Ensign Wilson aboard as Disbursing Officer. He departed the Tidewater in December 1955 and is a LIFE MEMBER of the Association. He was promoted to LTjg prior to his departure from the Navy in 1956.

Jack L. Winans - Member No. 0126 - resides in Murraysville, WV with his wife, Thelma. He reported aboard the Tidewater in October 1964 and worked in 2nd Division and eventually became an HTSN. Jack departed the Tide in October 1966 and is a LIFE MEMBER of the AD31 Association.

Paul Witkowski - Member No. 0021 - resides in Athens, OH with his wife, Jean. Paul is a founding member of the AD31 Association. He came aboard the Tidewater at the start of the 1960 Med Cruise where he worked in R-1 Division's Shipfitter/Pipefitter Shop. He departed the Tide in February 1961 as an SFP2 and went on to a civilian career at Ohio University, recently retiring from their Public Broadcasting Center as the Telecommunications Center's Associate Director and was recently granted the title of Associate Director Emeritus by Ohio University's Board of Trustees. Paul is a LIFE MEMBER of the AD31 Association.

Phillip W. Worrall - Member No. 0139 - resides in Baltimore, Maryland. He reported aboard the USS Tidewater in October 1961 as a Seaman and worked in the Electronics Shop as a striker. He took the ET exam without any A-School training and as he says "Surprise, I passed!" Phil subsequently was promoted to ETN3 and made one Med Cruise in 1962. He departed the Tidewater in July 1963 and is a LIFE MEMBER of the AD31 Association.

Ron Wyatt - Member No. 0173 - resides in Granite City, IL with his wife, Clara. Ron reported aboard the USS Tidewater in September 1962 and worked in R4 Division's ET Shop. He made the 1963 Med Cruise and says he took lots of pictures - several of which are of our Association President, Bill Cook, who was an ET in Ron's division and spent a lot of liberties with him ashore in Naples, Italy and Toulon, France. Wyatt departed the Tidewater in September 1964 and is a LIFE MEMBER of the AD31 Association.

Alexander Young - Member No. 0057 - resides in Jamesburg, New Jersey and is a founding member of the AD31 Association. He came aboard the Tidewater in April 1953 and worked in the Ship's Company Print Shop. He was a member of the crew who, in February 1954, participated in the Tidewater's first Med Cruise, visiting the ports of Naples, Leghorn, Barcelona, Algeria, Palermo and Hyeres. Alexander departed AD31 in June 1955 as a PI3 and is a LIFE MEMBER of the AD31 Association.
CWO2 Francis H. Zeigler - Member No. 0056 - resides in McSherrystown, PA with his wife, Donna and is a founding member of the AD31 Association. He came aboard the Tidewater in January 1968 and assumed the duties of Chief Ship's Repair Tech Officer and was the R1 Division Officer, which oversaw the Shipfitter, Carpenter, Sheetmetal, Pattern, Pipe, Welding and Canvas shops. CWO Ziegler departed the Tidewater in December 1969 and is a LIFE MEMBER of the AD31 Association.
