City, FL with his wife, Janice, and is a founding
member of the Association. Hank reported aboard AD31 in February
1962 beginning a 5-year tour aboard the Tidewater where he worked in R5

34th Street" and is the spittin' image of old St. Nick and yes, "the
beard on his chin IS as white as the snow." Walter departed

E. "Buzz" Beesley - Member No. 0040 - resides in Nokomis,
FL with his wife, Nancy. Buzz reported aboard AD31 as a member of its first

He is a founding member
of the AD31 Association. Kingsley came aboard the Tidewater in July
1956 where he worked in R2 Division and was the lead petty officer in the
Foundry during his last two years aboard AD31. Many of his excellent photos

departed the Tidewater in May of 1959 as an ML2 and is a LIFE

S. Blackstock - Member No. 0190 - resides in Marietta, GA. He
came aboard the Tidewater in 1963 and worked in ship's company "O"
Division as a signalman. We have a photo
of him doing his almost daily routine of communicating with other ship's
to schedule their maintenance. This photo was taken in Naples in 1964 as
he was operating the light shutter on the 03 deck. Bill departed the Tidewater
as SM1 in 1963 and eventually retired from the Navy with 20 years service.

Chief
Steven R. Bradshaw - Member No. 0028 - resides in Othello, WA
with is wife, Linda, and is a founding member
of the Association. He served two tours of duty on the Tidewater over a
seven year period, first coming aboard in April 1963. He was discharged
from the Navy in August 1966 and then 2 years later, he re-enlisted and
was promptly assigned to the Tidewater again in July 1968, finally departing
for the last time in December 1970 as an OM2. Steve eventually went on in
his career in the Navy, retiring in 1983 as OMC. He is a LIFE

of the Association. Terry came aboard the Tidewater in April 1959 and worked

of excellent photos of some of the diving projects in which he participated
and they will featured in upcoming issues of the newletter and at the web

joined the Association in June 2007 with a 1 year membership. He came aboard
the Tidewater in November 1951 when she was in Charleston. Fred worked in

Lloyd
"Jim" Cevora - Member No. 0019 - resides in Norfolk,
VA with his wife, Sevilla. He is a founding
member of the Association and is the First Vice Commander
of the Tidewater Post 327 of the American Legion in Norfolk. Jim spent a
total of 24 years in the U. S. Navy and came aboard the Tidewater in January
1970, working in S-1 Division's Data Processing Department as a DP1. He
says about his tour "I rode the Tidewater to Yorktown for the offload
and was one of the last to get off before the Indonesians took over."
Jim pitched on the ship's fast pitch softball team. He departed AD31 in
February 1971 and is a LIFE MEMBER of

R. "Pap" Clark - Member No. 0026 - resides in Taylor,
MI with his wife, Anita. He is a founding member
of the Association. Allan was a ship's company electrician on AD31 and came
aboard in June 1952. He started as an EM striker and after making EM3 was
sent to permanenet Shore Patrol duty where he was assigned as a partner
to a police officer in Princess Ann County, VA. Later, upon coming back
to the Tide, he was assigned as Master-At-Arms. Allan finished his tour

web site. Bill came aboard the Tidewater out of ET "A" school
in October, 1962 as an ET striker and departed AD31 in September 1965
as an ET2. His duties aboard the ship included radar repair and lead petty

"Bud"Dangler - Member No. 0183 - resides in Naples,
FL with his wife, Carol. He entered the U.S. Navy at Great Lakes Naval
Training Center in April 1951. He reported aboard the Tidewater in October
1951 to Engineering Division, and was a member of the first crew when
AD31 was recommissioned. Bud worked in the Fire Room as a boiler tender,
and in After Steering. He departed the Tidewater in October 1953 as FN

Patrick DelGrande - Member No. 0123 - resides in Hillsdale,
NY with his wife, Yvonne. Dr. DelGrande reported aboard the Tidewater
in May 1957 where he served as Assistant Dental Officer. He performed
his dental duties during the 1958 Med Cruise and has fond memories of
his years aboard AD31. He says "I can still hear the OD yelling down
to me as I left the Tidewater with my cruise box, 'Hey, Doc, are all
your mistakes in that box?'" Lt. DelGrande departed the ship
in May 1959 and still maintains his dental practice in upstate New York.

John P. Derr - Member No. 0088 - resides in Port Charlotte,
FL with his wife, Dottie. Cdr. Derr began his relationship with our association
as XO Emeritus, a distinction which the membership betowed
upon him as AD31's last Executive Officer before the ship was decommissioned
and sold to Indonesia as the Dumai. Mr. Derr started his naval career
at Annapols, graduating in 1952 as an Ensign, and then reporting aboard
the USS Tuckert (DDR 875) as its First Lieutenant, when the Tuckert was
operating off Korea. In 1974, Cdr. Derr commanded the Philadelphia Reserve
Fleet of 105 inactive ships where the ships now at Patriots Point were
then docked. He served on a total of 6 ships, mostly cruisers and destroyers.
The Tidewater was his last, where he served as her Executive Officer until
she was decommissioned in 1971. Since his appointment as our XO Emeritus,
he has joined the AD31 Association as a founding

J. Dewasme - Member No. 0119 - resides in Peoria, IL. Jim reported
aboard the Tidewater in August 1951. He worked in the Ship's Service Office,
and also did a hitch on the Master At Arms staff during his last year
on AD31. Jim says he found out about the AD31 Association in VFW Magazine.
In his words, "I didn't know there was a group like this; I wondered
if there was. I have a 1954 Med Cruise Book and a lot of slides from that
trip." Jim sent us a few of his black and white snapshots and an
excellent black and white photo of the Tide as it passed under the Cooper
River Bridge after her shakedown cruise in 1952. We plan to use some of
his photos in the future on the web site and in the High Tide newsletter.

the Captain's driver. During his second year on AD31, he moved to the
Storekeeping Division's supply office where he was in charge of equipment
records, supplies and manuals and screened parts and supplies requests
for repairs to outside vessels. He remained in the supply office until
he departed the Tide in December 1955 as an SK2 and is a LIFE

Robert T. Frampton - Member No. 0154 - resides in Jacksonville FL
and reported aboard the Tidewater in January 1968 as Supply Officer. He
departed the Tidewater in May 1969, eventually retiring from the Navy

and operates a Hallmark Store in Lake City, FL and is a LIFE

his wife, Genevieve. Rik is a founding member

Bernard C. Frank - Member
No. 0193 - resides in Jacksonville, FL with his wife Anne. He was
was aboard during the '67 Med Cruise when Israel shot up the USS LIBERTY.
He also was one of the last sailors to see the Tidewater as the Dumai
when it went through the Panama Canal Zone. He was stationed there as
NEX Officer in 1971. He says "It was sad to see her leave because
I knew we would never see her again." Bernard came aboard the Tidewater
in October 1966 and served as Ships Store Officer in S-4 Division. He

He entered the US Navy in 1947 and lists his duty stations as USS Fargo

C. Gilbert - Member No. 0148 - resides in Benton, KY. He says
that while aboard the Tidewater, he found "true love" on a blind
date that shipmate Don Bob Usher and his wife arranged. Now, 51 years
later, Harry and his wife, Mary celebrated their 51st wedding anniversary
in April 2006. Harry reported aboard the Tidewater in July 1951 and worked
in Ship's Company as a Disbursing Clerk. He departed in April 1955 as

L. Gostony - Member No. 0081 - resides, most appropriately,

of the AD31 Association. Joe reported aboard the Tidewater in 1964 and
worked in S-3 Division's Commissary as "Jack Of Dust." He departed
the Tide in 1966 as CS3 and is a LIFE MEMBER

Association. He reported aboard the Tidewater in April 1953 and worked
on the Signal Bridge and in the Navigation Department of Ship's Company.

in the Fiftes and they separated them just before I left the ship."

1971 and was a member of the crew who helped place the Tidewater into
the Mothball Fleet. His duties aboard the Tidewater included serving on
the XO's staff and he maintains a friendship with Commander John Derr
(his AD31 Executive Officer) to this day. Bob departed the Tidewater as

Gerald A. Haworth - Member No. 0181 - resides in Lynch Station,
VA with his wife, Dorothy. He first reported aboard the Tidewater as FN
in 1951 and worked in Repair Division's Machine Shops and the Diving Locker.
He departed AD31 in 1953 as MR2 and continued on with a career in the
Navy that spanned 22 years, eventually reaching the rank of CWO2 before
retiring. The Haworth family maintains a very comprehensive website at

Jerry, his family and his life as a retired sailor - well worth the visit. Irvin
Hayward - Member No. 0073 - resides in Port Huron, MI with
his wife Kathleen and is a founding member
of the AD31 Association. Irvin came aboard the Tidewater in the mid Forties
prior to commissioning. "I was the Outside Man for the Ship,"
he says. "I played on the baseball team and was on the bowling team."
Irvin departed the Tidewater in March 1946 as SK2. Jack

that he was a sailor who knew how to enjoy both port and starboard liberty,
no matter what port we were in. The fact that he was the Yeoman in charge

The one when AD31 and an oiler collided and ripped a large hole in the side
of the Tidewater, or the one when the Tide got stuck in a hurricane and

Byron "Ken" Overbeck, Jr. - Member No. 0041 - resides
in Cartersville, GA and is a founding member
of the Association. Commander Overbeck served two tours on the Tidewater,
reporting first in July 1956 as MM1 in R2 Division. In October 1957, he
was appointed WO-1 in charge of Outside Machinery Repair and finished
this first tour on AD31 in December 1957. He reported back aboard the
Tidewater in August of 1967 with the rank of Lieutenant Commander and
assumed the duties of AD31's Repair Officer. He completed his tour on
the Tide in February 1970 and joins us as a LIFE

wife, Shirley. He first reported aboard the Tidewater in September 1951
and was a member of the recommissioning crew who brought the Tide out

Optical Shop while aboard the Tide and departed in May 1953 as OM2. Dick

of the Association. Jack reported aboard the Tide in November 1955 and

eventually retire from the USN with 22 years as BM1. Elwood is Thomas

He reported aboard AD31 in July 1951 out of Boot Camp where he did 3 months

Central. Jerry did a TAD with COMDESFLOT4 aboard the USS Sierra and the
USS Yellowstone and left the Tide as TE3 for NAVCOMMSTA, Port Lyautey,
Morocco. He is still working in radio today for 3 radio stations in Maryland.

He joined the AD31 Association right after attending his first AD31 reunion
at Branson in 2008. "Diane and I had a great time. I don't know if
can get any better. We made some great friends and we look forward to
the next one," he said about the get together. Clarence worked in
R2 Division's Light and Heavy Machine Shops and came aboard in 1960. He
made two Med Cruises - 1960 and 1962 and departed the Tidewater in 1963

E. Robertson - Member No. 0166 - resides in Lawson, MO and
joined the Tidewater Association in June 2007 as a LIFE
MEMBER. He says he stood radio watches in the Radio
Shack and worked in Operations Division during his tour aboard AD31, reporting

He came aboard the Tide in April 1970 and worked as a Storekeeper in charge
of the technical library. His job was to process DD-1250s that came in
from AD31 or any ships we serviced and route them to the correct storeroom.
Richard says he has a lot of stories about his short tour on the Tidewater
but wants to save them for the reunion. He departed the Tidewater in November

"Rosco" Rossicone - Member No. 0090 - resides in
Meriden, CT and is a founding member
of the Association. Rosco came aboard the Tide in 1966 as a member of
R2 Division where he worked as Machine Repairman. He departed the Tidewater

Christian L. Rothhaus, Jr. - Member No. 0125 - resides in Bow,
NH with his wife, Donna. Chris reported aboard the Tidewater in 1966 and
worked in the Supply Division as the Ship's Store Buyer and Accountant.
He received his Chief rating and became the father of a daughter (he and
Donna already had 4 sons) in September 1967 and his daughter, Heidi Charlene,
was christened on board the Tidewater. He says the Chaplain did some research
and found that her christening was a first for the Tidewater. He departed
AD31 in June 1968 as SHC and is a LIFE MEMBER

with his wife Susan. He first reported aboard the Tidewater in July 1951
and worked in the Electrical Repair Department. During his tour of duty
on AD31 he advanced from EM3 to EM1 and cruised to GITMO, Glasgow Scotland,
Bergen Norway and Cherbourg, France. Chief Salley says, "While
in Glasgow the USS Coates lost her Gyro and rammed AD31 putting her starboard
anchor in the Crew's Mess." He remembers Cherbourg as a time
when no reconstruction of WWII damage had taken place. "Tourist
ships were just beginning to make port calls and passengers were not allowed
in the city. Trains were backed onto the pier where passengers were routed
direct from their ship to the train cars and on to Paris." Chief

R. B. reported aboard the Tidewater in October 1962 just after AD31 had
returned from the 1962 Med Cruise and just prior to a scheduled overhaul
in the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard in Portsmouth, VA. He worked in R5 Division's
Optical Shop. Tant departed the Tide in May 1966 as OM3 and later was
advanced to OM2 in the Active Reserve. R. B. is a LIFE

Gerald
F. Teaster - Member No. 0005 - resides in Summerville,
SC. He is a founding member
of the AD31 Association and joins us as a Friend of the Tidewater.
His membership in our organization is significant as his father, Fred
Teaster, was a shipfitter in Charleston's Naval Shipyard and helped build
the Tidewater. As a child, Gerald saw AD31 on the Buildingways, just before
she was launching. As an adult he worked in the Charleston Naval Shipyard
as a Mechanical Engineer and retired from there when the shipyard closed.
Gerald represents many of the Charlestonians who cherish their memories
of the largest ship ever built in Charleston during World War II and He
joins us as a LIFE MEMBER of the AD31

Andrew
W. White - Member No. 0175 - resides in Toccoa, GA with his
wife, Margaret. He came aboard our ship in 1952 and worked on ships tied
up alongside, repairing water tight doors, replacing worn or rusted parts
which were identified on a work order from the Repair Department. Andrew
departed AD31 in 1955 as ME2 when he was transferred to the USS Grand
Canyon (AD28) and served until 1956. He made the 1954 Med Cruise and the
1952 NATO Cruise while aboard the Tidewater. He is a LIFE

aboard the Tidewater in 1952 and worked in the Litho Shop as a Printer.
Don made a Caribbean Cruise while aboard AD31 and departed in 1953 as
PI3. He then reported to the USS Wisconsin where he served until his separation
from active duty in 1955. Don then joined the Naval Reserve and retired
as LICS after 24 years, serving a total of 28 years with the US Navy and

and also in Crypto. After departing AD31 in March 1964 as SM1, he made
a career of the Navy, serving on four other ships, the USS Robert A. Owens
(DD827), the USS Ohara (DD889), the USS Coronado (LPD11) and the USS Raleigh
(LPD1). His career in the Navy spanned 27 years and he retired as NCCS.

a civilian career at Ohio University, recently retiring from their Public
Broadcasting Center as the Telecommunications Center's Associate Director
and was recently granted the title of Associate Director Emeritus by Ohio

- resides in Baltimore, Maryland. He reported aboard the USS Tidewater
in October 1961 as a Seaman and worked in the Electronics Shop as a striker.
He took the ET exam without any A-School training and as he says "Surprise,
I passed!" Phil subsequently was promoted to ETN3 and made one Med
Cruise in 1962. He departed the Tidewater in July 1963 and is a LIFE

Wyatt - Member No. 0173 - resides in Granite City, IL with
his wife, Clara. Ron reported aboard the USS Tidewater in September 1962
and worked in R4 Division's ET Shop. He made the 1963 Med Cruise and says
he took lots of pictures - several of which are of our Association President,
Bill Cook, who was an ET in Ron's division and spent a lot of liberties
with him ashore in Naples, Italy and Toulon, France. Wyatt departed the

Young - Member No. 0057 - resides in Jamesburg, New Jersey
and is a founding member
of the AD31 Association. He
came aboard the Tidewater in April 1953 and worked in the Ship's Company
Print Shop. He was a member of the crew who, in February 1954, participated
in the Tidewater's first Med Cruise, visiting the ports of Naples, Leghorn,
Barcelona, Algeria, Palermo and Hyeres. Alexander departed AD31 in June
1955 as a PI3 and is a LIFE MEMBER
of the AD31 Association.
CWO2
Francis H. Zeigler - Member No. 0056 - resides in McSherrystown,
PA with his wife, Donna and is a founding
member of the AD31 Association. He came aboard the Tidewater
in January 1968 and assumed the duties of Chief Ship's Repair Tech Officer
and was the R1 Division Officer, which oversaw the Shipfitter, Carpenter,
Sheetmetal, Pattern, Pipe, Welding and Canvas shops. CWO Ziegler departed
the Tidewater in December 1969 and is a LIFE
MEMBER of the AD31 Association.
